Active Acting Seminar Taught by Charles Waxberg at Eclectic Theater  ShortHair3

For Immediate Release                                                                             08/04/15

Contact: rikdeskin@gmail.com

Your talent lies in your choices.”  –Stella Adler

WHAT: Eclectic Theater is excited to host acclaimed acting coach Charles Waxberg in a dynamic and active workshop using the accessible, method-busting script-analysis techniques of Stella Adler. Previously offered exclusively to Theatre9/12company members, the seminar will consist of practical exercises and short scene work designed to merge the analytical side of script work with the limitless imagination of the individual performer. Based on The Actor’s Script—Script Analysis for Performers(written by Waxberg) participants will fortify their understanding of:

  • Beats
  • Characterization
  • Background
  • Given Circumstances
  • Dramatic Conflict
  • Styles
  • Largest Themes/Ruling Ideas that make entertaining performance into great theatre.

Students can participate fully in the workshop for $240, or audit and observe the process for $80. To register, please contact Rik Deskin at rikdeskin@gmail.com

WHO:  Charles Waxberg is a former student and close artistic associate of Stella Adler, having taught at both her New York and Los Angeles schools as well as internationally celebrated Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. He is the artistic director of Theatre9/12 in Seattle.

WHERE: Eclectic Theater, 1214 10th Ave, Seattle, WA  98122

WHEN: Saturdays beginning August 29 (from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm) for 8 weeks, culminating on October 24 (no class Saturday September 5).

WHY: The strongest choices are those that collaborate closest with the script.  A playwright consciously and unconsciously suggests strong choices and offers clues to characterization, dramatic tension, and the greatest themes of the play or film. The actor’s job is to translate these clues into playable actions, observable characters, and  theatrical conflict. This course will instruct participants to do just that, and fills a void with respect to Adler’s teachings.

My First Sony-pictureMY FIRST SONY

is based on an Israeli best-seller novel, written by Benny Barbash.

This is a Seattle Premiere!

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 8pm

Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 8pm

It is the story of the deterioration of an Israeli family, told by Yotam, an eleven year old child. Obsessed with documentation, he records everything in his children’s tape recorder, “My First Sony”. He follows the events and reports them accurately, a fact which emphasizes the comic aspect of painful developments in his life, such as his parents’ separation and the inevitable ending

“That night too I woke up and heard Mom and Dad arguing. Mom said to Dad that he was f-ing up her life with all his playing around, and his walking out on us and his moods, and she was fed up, fed up: and he answered back that it was hard for him too, and he felt stifled and stuck in a rut, and his time was running out and, he never succeeded in getting anything done; then she said that if he cried less over his wasted time he wouldn’t waste so much time; and he asked her not to be nasty”

Roy Horovitz’ MY FIRST SONY has become an international hit, touring and representing Israel in the last 19 years in U.S.A, Germany, Slovakia, South Africa, Egypt, The Netherlands, Czech Republic — enjoying rave international reviews:

“A beautiful and very well acted play… Not a dull moment. Horovitz is sensitive, natural and convincing. He successfully plays a child without falling into childishness, and gains sympathy without gushing ‘shmaltz’”
(the Daily Yediot Aharonot).

“Having toured My First Sony round the theater circuit for 15 years now, Horovitz has had plenty of time to nail the show, and this is one of those Fringe moments where you feel you’ve found a real bargain.”
(Prague Post)

These performances are part of the larger North American tour, which includes additional performances at the Vancouver Fringe, Toronto and Montreal.

The Improvinati

Friday, September 25 at 8pm.

Tickets are $10 Advance at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2149379, $12 at the door!

Join us for the next Improvinati meeting where your secrets inspire the show. The meeting will be at the Eclectic Theater where we will be turning Capitol Hill into Capitol Thrill…

  • The Improvinati aims to bring laughter and light into the dark places of the collective human soul.
  • Long Description

The Improvinati has determined that it is time to once again hold regular meetings. The world is becoming dull and drab and our influence over the spheres of power is slipping. We must act now to regain control and bring humanity back towards laughter and light!

Brothers Justin Lund, Tom Roe, John Stevens, and Kelsey Todd have been appointed as our public face and will be facilitating this humorous shift in a quiet corner of the world, the Pacific Northwest.

Brothers Bryan Higa and Kevin Zimmerman have been sent to gain a toehold in other major US cities.

Mankind’s existence as we know it is in question. The Improvinati must prevail.

Please stay tuned for announcements of future engagements.

    FAQ

    Question: Who are the Improvinati?

Answer: Well, YOU are! You would not have received this communication were you not. You are obviously one of our many uncountable members.

Question: I do not recall joining the Improvinati. I think you may have added me by mistake. Is this some kind of secret society?

Answer: No, the Improvinati is THE secret society which all other secret societies emerged from. It is so pervasive and so secret that you most likely already became a member at some point but forgot.

Re-member today! All that is necessary to become a member in good standing once again is simply to attend your next local meeting and pay your dues at the door.

Question: When was the Improvinati founded?

Answer: In time immemorial. The Improvinati was born the same day that the mysterious, powerful, and transformative power of laughter was released into the world.

The day that the complexity, tediousness, strife, hunger, fear, cold, and unpredictable nature of the universe built up inside of a fed-up hominid and erupted!

However, that day, unlike so many countless days before, that stress emerged not as violence, but as laughter. At first the Hominid was shocked by this nervous alchemical reaction, but soon the joy that emanated from it coursed through its veins. In pure ecstasy it looked up defiantly into the cosmos with serotonin and dopamine pumping trough its body and tears of joy streaming down its cheeks.

Laughter became language and soon the first tribes were formed. Society was quickly and naturally divided into two distinct groups; those who got the joke, and those who didn’t.

Written by Leonard D. Goodisman.

Five lives are put at stake when Marie, a high school sophomore, gets suspended from school for an alleged computer attack and begins to believe she may truly not belong. Her parents, sensing this is their fight as well, jump up to take action against the school principal, who believes she has done the best she can in carrying out the suspension. However, tensions rise when Marie’s father meets a lawyer who proudly tells him of the biggest accomplishment of his career – the very law that made Marie’s suspension so easy – and everyone begins to face the reality that their “best” may have led them down a darker path than intended.
